Installation Evaluation.

Installation Evaluation.

My installation was an engagement installation, I wanted to make something about two people crossing paths and meeting each other, falling in love and getting engaged. I think I did it quite well, I used orange lighting gels to give off a sunset effect. When editing the installation I felt that something was missing, so I wanted to go back and film more, I did so but then the footage did not fit in well with what I had already filmed and edited, after thinking about it and with some help from my teacher we came to the conclusion that when the installation is projected it will feel finished. My installation was more about where and how I projected it. I really loved the way I did it, I projected the installation on a photo album which I was holding, it was a connotation of looking back at memories. I feel that it was very creative and the concept and installation worked really well together.

Evaluation of Photo's

Photography Evaluation.

For this unit we were asked to become photographers, we learned a lot on how to use the camera’s to get the best photo’s.
I chose to do an engagement shoot, many of my idea’s changed. You can see from my mind map that at first I wanted to do the shoot outside in a park or a quite street with one couple, but I was unable to go outside to take the photo’s because it was raining quite heavily. So I decided to take three couples into the studio, and we just took it in turns to take pictures, I wanted to capture happy moments, so when I saw the couples laughing I just took a picture. I think I captures some nice moments, in a few of the pictures you can really feel the chemistry between the couples.
My photo shoot was professional in they way that I was in a studio, I used a Cannon DSLR 11000, I used and arranged portable lights with Gel Lights to light up the set. Also i attempted to minimise the shadows, I booked time with the couples and styled them to achieve the look I wanted by arranging make up and telling them what to wear. I also editing the photo's in post production by cropping, adjusting and retouching them.
Marianne Taylor is a photographer who does nice styled engagement shoots, I believe my photo's were only similar in the way that we both use happy couples. Our pictures were very different in the way that Marianne's pictures have different things in them such as engagement rings. She has the couples going on a little adventure to many different locations which i would of loved to do.
I am pleased with my pictures i think they look good and not much editing had to be done with them, I had loads of pictures that were not good enough the ones i have chosen were the best ones in the collection. If I had a chance to do it again I would of taken the photo's in different locations like a park or on a nice street with pretty tree's, or had different backgrounds, and I would also of maybe used lighting gels to give the photographs some colour. Also in the future I would like to build a narrative.

Is the DVD dead?

Is the DVD dead?

DVD’s have been around for a while, but will they be used in the future?  Now that there are so many other ways to watch films and programs e.g. illegal websites, downloading, recording on sky box or virgin broadband etc.
In a DVD you will find many things on the inside and outside. On the case for example on the case of the DVD there will be a front cover showing a picture of the film, on the back of the case there will be a synopsis saying what the film is about, there will also be the (Age Rating) British Film Classification Rating, Copy Right Warnings, a list of things saying what is in the film e.g. violence, sexual scene's ect and a barcode. On the DVD itself there will be Trailers of other movies, when you get to the main menu there will be a 'Play' button where you can play the movie from the start, a 'Scene Selection' button where you can play the movie from a specific scene, a 'Special Features' button where you can watch many different things such as 'Behind the Scenes', 'Bloopers' 'Deleted Scenes' and there might be a game to play as well.
There are many reasons to think that DVD’s will become ‘extinct’, just like video’s did, one being that now we have things like ‘Netflix’ where you can watch films  and programs instantly on a computer, laptops, PlayStation, iPad etc. Another sign that the DVD is ‘dying out’ is that stores like ‘Blockbusters’ and ‘HMV’ where you can rent/buy DVD’s are closing down. When watching things online you don’t have to wait you can watch it when its in cinema for free, whereas with DVD’s you have to wait until they’re out of cinema and released in store. This makes us think that there is no hope for DVD’s anymore, because most people would rather download or watch something for free than buy DVD’s.
However there are also a lot of things that suggest the DVD will be here in the future too. For instants ‘Lovefilm’ still has DVD’s and customers can rent them from the site, if they thought DVD’s were not going to be used in the future they would not waste money on buying DVD’s to rent out and would stick to their instant online viewing. Also when you have a DVD the quality is so much better than when you’re watching it online, and you won’t have many problems watching a DVD as you would watching a film or program online because you’re not relying on your broadband speed it may be very slow so that will cause problems when watching things online. Many people like DVD’s because of the special feature’s as well as watching the movie, when watching things elsewhere you don’t have special features. Collecting DVD’s is something a lot of people enjoy doing, having box set’s, and saga’s all together is nice to have, and also you have a physical product that you can call your own. DVD collections can look very nice in your living room if displayed well. Watching things online or downloading things can cause virus’, which also tells us DVD’s will be around for a long time because with a DVD you don’t get a virus. Finally another reason why DVD’s might still have a chance is that they are more user friendly, older people and people who aren’t very technical know how to use them, so instead of going through the fuss of finding what you want to watch you just go to your DVD collection, or buy the DVD, put in in the DVD playing press play and you’re ready to go.
In conclusion there are many reasons why the DVD has no future but there are more reasons to support the DVD having a future. I think that the DVD will be a round for a long, long time but just like the video something new will come in its place, however I don’t think that it’s any time soon. There might even be a chance that DVD’s will last forever and never not be around just like cinema is about having an experience, the DVD is about owning the movie/program yourself, personally I prefer to have a DVD and watch things like that rather than go online.

Projecting My Installation.

The idea I had of projecting my installation was to project it on a Photo Album and for me to be sitting on the floor holding it whilst the installation was projecting. I thought this would be a good idea because my installation was about two people meeting having fun together, falling in love and becoming engaged, and it being shown on a photo album was like looking back on a beautiful memory.

I had the person who was in the installation with me playing the character of my partner holding the projector I think it is a nice connotation for him being part of the memories and if he wasn’t there it would be like a missing part of a puzzle, the memories would not be there either.

I believe I projected my installation in an appropriate way it was very relevant to the concept. The viewers also said that they loved how the installation was projected in such a creative way and they understood the concept and the story I was telling through my installation.

The things I would change would be where I was sitting I would of preferred it if we were in a small corner of a dark room, however the place I had on decided was unavailable at the time so I had to improvise and hose to do it sitting in the middle of the floor, as if I were in my bedroom looking back on the memories.
Overall I was pleased with the way my installation looked when it was being projected.

Instalation Artists

                                  Video installation artists

Yann Novak

Yann Novak is a sound and video installation artist who works and lives in USA, Los Angeles, he was born 1979 Madison. He uses for inspiration for his art as documents of personal experiences into an open ended autobiographical narrative. His work utilizes loads of different manners of digital documentation as an arrowhead of departure. He has had his work presented internationally in cities such as Tokyo, London, Rome and Miami.
Novak's work does not really cause controversy however it is different to other installation artists work as it is based around sound instead of visual art.

Pipilotti Rist

Elisabeth Charlotte ‘Pipilotti’ Rist is a Video Installation artist who was born in June 21, 1962, Canton of St. Gallen Switzerland.  She specialises in working in film, moving images and video, which are predominantly displayed as projections. Her work generally relates to issues, which are related to Gender, the human body and sexuality. And unlike most other video installation artists her work generates colourful and musical which is very happy and simple.
These installations could offend people because they might not want to see the human body for religious reasons for example Muslims, Christians and Jews because they believe that they should not look at another persons body unless they are married to said person. These images may be seen as pornographic and very sexual.

Bill Viola

Bill Viola is a Video installation and contemporary video artist born January 25th 1951 he specialises in making art based on his traumatic past. As a child he almost drown as a result of this experience it inspired him to produce art which involved life, death and water. He uses a full range of techniques, which creates the Illusion of people and water merging. His art has been displayed internationally and he is one of the worlds most recognised and decorated video installation artists.
This could offend people who have had a horrible experience with drowning and they might not want to relive it, they might think a mockery is being made out of drowning. Also Viloa's work could offend the church as in some pieces the actors playing Jesus then 'Jesus becomes the devil and various other things, this will offend many people and religions. People may find this offensive because they believe that you should not portray a religious figure in this way.
