Comparing Two Idents E4 vs Channel4

The E4 ident first starts with a plain living room, then the TV turns on and the living room comes to life with grass coming from the fireplace, the walls become purple, trees start to grow in the middle of the living room and toys start to come to life.

The Channel4 ident begins with a truck driving towards a typical american diner, then when it drives past the diner we see an animation of the Channel4 logo forming with blocks.

The E4 logo represents the brand of the channel by covering the room in purple which people recognise as the channel's colour, the logo is shown a number of times throughout the ident. The values of the channel were shown by the ident being quirky, fun, humorous, and random which represent the people who tend to watch that channel (teenagers and young people). The ident has a fast pace and is full of action which will stop viewers from getting bored and turning the channel over. The ident isn't specifically for one sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity, race and it is targeted at all young people from all social groups. The ident appeals the the channels target audience as it is funny, random and it doesn't bore you by being slow.

The Channel4 logo is shown in the ident in a very interesting way which represents the brand. The values of the ident were shown as it gives off a feel of maturity because it has a slow pace is isn't full of animation, and isn't action packed which represents the target audience (middle aged and older people). The ident's pace is quite slow which in some cases may make the viewer lose interest and switch the channel but in other cases it could make the viewer feel a sense of urgency and anticipation waiting for the logo to appear and then when the logo does appear it's done in such an unusual way that the viewer doesn't realise the pace was slow. This ident also isn't for a specific sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity, race and it is targeted to all mature people from all social groups. The ident does appeal to the channels target audience because it is mature, calm, and also interesting in the way the logo appears

In summary both idents are very similar in successfully targeting their audience. However are different in the styles that are used the E4 ident is very quirky, upbeat, funny and highly animated whereas the Channel4 ident is very mature, has a slow pace and has only one animation.

Channel Idents

The things these indents have in common with each other are:
They all show the logo at the end of the, the E4 logo was show throughout, the Al Jazeera logo was shown at the beginning and then again at the end and also the SkyOne logo was shown at the end. All of these idents have a distinctive colour which make the channel recognisable when people think of E4 they think of the colour purple. All of these three ads were animated however not all idents are animated. All of the idents represented the channel by using the distinctive colour and logo. Another thing the idents had in common were the length they were very short they were all under thirty seconds.

Purpose of Channel Idents.
The purpose of Channel Idents are that they are meant to advertise the channel, they establish the channel name, logo, colour and values. Channel Indents are important as they are what the viewer see's during ad breaks and if they are bored by the ident they could easily turn the channel over. Also idents can give the viewer an idea of what program is coming on next - for example when the weather is coming on BBC1 he ident before would be one that relates to the weather.
